Black Adam is a new American superhero movie based on the same-named DC Comics superhero. It is supposed to be a spin-off from Shazam! (2019) and the eleventh film in the DC Extended Universe, produced by DC Films, New Line Cinema, Seven Bucks Productions, and FlynnPictureCo., and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures (DCEU). The film stars Dwayne Johnson as Aldis Hodge, Pierce Brosnan, Noah Centineo, Quintessa Swindell, and Sarah Shahi and is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra from a screen storey and screenplay by Adam Sohrab Noshirvani, Rory Haines, and Sztykiel.

Johnson was tied to Shazam! early on in the production process, and in September 2014, he revealed that he will play the villain Black Adam.  the filmmakers decided to In January 2017 give the role his own movie, and Sztykiel was recruited in October of that year. Collet-Serra entered in June 2019 with a scheduled release started on December 2021, but still the COVID-19 pandemic pushed it back. In the next year, further casting actually takes place, notably for officers of the Justice Society of America (JSA), and Noshirvani Haines and  rewrote the script. Filming took place in Los Angeles, Georgia, and Atlanta from April to August 2021.

Black Adam Production:

In the early 2000s, New Line Cinema began developing a Shazam! picture centered on the DC Comics superhero Captain Marvel. Due to licencing concerns, DC was unable to use the title Captain Marvel, thus the title comes from the wizard Shazam, who bestows the hero’s abilities. In April 2006, Peter Segal signed on to helm the picture, and later that year, Dwayne Johnson was approached about playing Captain Marvel. Johnson was also interested in portraying the film’s antagonist, Black Adam, by November 2007, and had gotten encouraging feedback from fans regarding the possibility of him playing the role. When Warner Bros., the parent company of New Line and DC, began preparing a slate of superhero films for their shared world, the DC Extended Universe, in April 2014, development on the project was put on hold again (DCEU). Johnson stated in August that he was still engaged to the project but had not chosen whether he would portray Captain Marvel or Black Adam. Johnson revealed a month later that he will play Black Adam.

When studio heads were worried that an artist of Johnson’s profile was being utilised as a supervillain and supportive role in the picture instead of leading in it, Johnson met with DC’s Geoff Johns in January 2017 to work on the project. During that discussion, they agreed to break the production into two movies: Shazam! (2019), featuring Captain Marvel, who has now been renamed Shazam by DC, and starring Johnson, Black Adam as the title antihero. According to Johnson, the 2 actors will cross paths onscreen in the future. Johnson’s likeness is used in Shazam! for a magical holograph of Black Adam conjured by the wizard Shazam, but Johns confirmed in July that Johnson would not appear in the film.

Johnson hired Adam Sztykiel to write the storey for Black Adam, which he would produce alongside Seven Bucks Productions’ Dany and Hiram Garcia and Beau Flynn of FlynnPictureCo. Johnson was supposed to play Black Adam in the Suicide Squad sequel, which at the time had Gavin O’Connor on board as writer and perhaps director. The intention was for the Suicide Squad to be trailing a weapon of mass destruction, which would be revealed as Black Adam in a small part for Johnson, but those plans were shelved when O’Connor departed the project in 2018. Sztykiel had finished a draught of the Black Adam script by April 2018, and Johnson has suggested that production may begin in 2019.Sztykiel had submitted a new draught at the end of August, and further adjustments were in the works.  Shazam and Black Adam their own films would allow them to develop their characters in the best way possible, and that their portrayal of Black Adam would not be accurate “”He’s not the boy scout superhero, he’s the guy who’s like, okay, you cross him?” he says, softening up for the audience. So, I’m going to cut your head off “.. Due to his obligations to Red Notice (2021) and  Jumanji: The Next Level (2019), Johnson stated in December that filming would not start until the end of 2019. Following the success of Shazam!, New Line decided to make Black Adam a primary focus. After impressing Johnson as the director of Jungle Cruise, Jaume Collet-Serra was in discussions to helm the picture around June 2019. Black Adam, according to Collet-Serra, is the Dirty Harry of superheroes, and the film will depict a darker side of Johnson than the adventure comedy Jungle Cruise. Johnson said in October that filming will begin in July 2020, and that Black Adam would be released on December 22, 2021, the following month. He also stated that while Shazam will not feature in the film, members of the Justice Society of America (JSA) would.
