Fans may expect an even more hectic and philosophically rich Marvel adventure with the impending sequel to Doctor Strange.

Benedict Cumberbatch will reprise his role as Doctor Stephen Strange in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, directed by horror legend Sam Raimi.

Scott Derrickson, the director and co-writer of Doctor Strange, had ideas for a sequel by October 2016. Cumberbatch agreed to return as director when his comeback was announced in December 2018. In July 2019, the film’s title and Olsen’s involvement were confirmed, and in October, Bartlett was hired to write the script. Derrickson announced his departure as director in January 2020, citing aesthetic differences as the cause. The next month, Waldron joined the project, and Raimi took over as director in April 2020. Filming began in November 2020 in London, but was suspended in January 2021 due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

Robert Cargill, co-writer of Doctor Strange (2016), stated in April 2016 that Marvel Studios felt some of his and director Scott Derrickson’s early ideas for the film highlighted too much of the “weird stuff” associated with the comic book character Doctor Strange to include in an origin storey, but that they should keep them for future films. Derrickson announced in October that he was working on a sequel, noting his passion for the character and the artistic possibilities that come with him. According to Derrickson, the first film was “only the top of the iceberg.” There is a great deal that can be done.

He wanted to follow in the footsteps of The Dark Knight (2008) by creating a villain that would allow them to “dig deep [and] have a more visceral experience” in the sequel. Doctor Strange star Benedict Cumberbatch has signed on for at least one more project.Derrickson expressed interest in spotlighting the villain Nightmare and further developing the characters Jonathan Pangborn and Hamir after their brief cameos in the last film. He was “kept in the loop” on how the Avengers films were depicting the character thanks to his close relationships with Joe Russo, the co-director of Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige.
