RRR is a Telugu period action drama film directed by S. S. Rajamouli and produced by D. V. V. Danayya of DVV Entertainments. In addition to N. T. Rama Rao Jr., Ram Charan, Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, and Olivia Morris, Samuthirakani, Alison Doody, Ray Stevenson, and Shriya Saran star in the film. It is a fictional storey of two Indian rebels, Alluri Sitarama Raju (Charan) and Komaram Bheem (Rama Rao), who fought the British Raj and the Nizam of Hyderabad, respectively.
The script was written by Rajamouli based on a storey by K. V. Vijayendra Prasad. Rajamouli stumbled across reports of events that transpired in Rama Raju’s and Bheem’s lives and discovered a link between them. The concept that they may have been friends during their early years inspired Rajamouli to produce the film. The storey takes place in 1920 and covers an undocumented period in their lives when both revolutionaries opted to vanish before beginning the fight for their country.
The film was first announced in March 2018, with a premiere in November and principal photography commencing in November. The majority of the film was shot in India, with a few scenes shot in Ukraine and Bulgaria for good measure. The film was filmed by K. K. Senthil Kumar and edited by A. Sreekar Prasad, while M. M. Keeravani composed the soundtrack and background score. Sabu Cyril is the film’s production designer, and V. Srinivas Mohan is in charge of the visual effects.
In an interview with Variety in October 2017, S. S. Rajamouli unveiled two projects alongside producers D. V. V. Danayya of DVV Entertainment and K. L. Narayana after Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017). Rajamouli concentrated his attention on the first, a social drama that would be followed by Narayana’s partnership with Mahesh Babu. In November 2017, Rajamouli hinted to the film’s participation by uploading a photo with N. T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan on his social media pages.
When it was initially announced in March 2018, the film’s working title was RRR. K. V. Vijayendra Prasad authored the original storey, and Rajamouli penned the script, which took six months to finish. In September 2018, Madhan Karky (Tamil), Varadaraju Chikkaballapura (Kannada), Mamkombu Gopalakrishnan (Malayalam), and Riya Mukherjee were engaged to write the film’s Telugu dialogues, while Madhan Karky (Tamil), Varadaraju Chikkaballapura (Kannada), Mamkombu Gopalakrishnan (Malayalam) (Hindi). Rajamouli rehired several technicians from previous projects. M. M. Keeravani is the music director, K. K. Senthil Kumar is the director of photography, A. Sreekar Prasad is the film editor, Sabu Cyril is the production designer, V. Srinivas Mohan is the visual effects supervisor, and Rama Rajamouli is the costume designer. The film’s climax action sequences were directed and choreographed by Nick Powell, who also acted as stunt director.
Before the start of production, both Rama Rao and Charan attended a special workshop in mid-October 2018 to prepare physically and intensively for their roles in the film. The fundamental theme of the film was inspired by The Motorcycle Diaries (2004), according to Rajamouli, who was “fascinated by how a man named Che develops into a revolutionary named Guevara and have constructed the personalities of his protagonists around a common point, on similar lines.” Charan and Rama Rao play Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem’s younger equivalents, respectively. The storey follows them as they spend time in 1920s Delhi before going to battle for their country, but the plot is entirely made up. He went on to suggest that the circumstances surrounding the two Telugu tribal leaders were a coincidence.
